Overview:

The Home? Heritage project focused on the collection, curation, and dissemination of the lived experiences of people seeking sanctuary and people who have migrated to Northern England from the 2010s to 2024. The project used Community Reporting to capture people’s oral histories and archive research into local newspaper stories to highlight the contributions migrant groups have made to their local communities. This approach has provided insights into and helped to document the lives of migrant communities in terms of their domestic, working, and social lives.

The project took place in five locations across Northern England (Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Northumbria), and People’s Voice Media managed the project. We worked with local organisations to deliver Community Reporting training, archive research sessions, knowledge exchanges and screening events. We engage people seeking sanctuary and new migrants in the project, as well as local longer-term residents, cultural agencies and third sector organisations. We produce a range of outputs from the work, including an animation and a toolkit.

  • 65 people seeking sanctuary trained st Community Reporters
  • 98 lived experience stories gathered
